This photo of the brilliant red Mediterranean coral Corallium rubra (color of ruby,
hence the name) has a tale to tell. This semi-precious deep-water cold coral has become the target of
jewellers who make necklaces, bracelets and ornaments of all sorts from this coral species on commercial scale. The practice of trawling over live coral grounds can lead to total decline and disappearance of this species unless we must impose immediate restrictions or moratorium on this practice both within EEZs and in the High Seas. GIBS has made this a priority item in its agenda. This species is also GIBS organization symbol as shown in the left hand margin.
