Charismatic marine mammals and endangered species use cold coral reefs as home or a resting ‘oasis’. Photo shows a monk seal resting after a bite for “dinner” beneath the cold coral reef off Hawaiian Islands in the central Pacific Ocean. Do we want to obliterate this fragile ecosystem by using heavy fishing trawls over it? Definitely “No”.! We must soon impose a US Congress- imposed ‘moratorium’ on commercial trawling over al known hard-bottom cold coral habitats within US EEZ. This is GIBS view as well as the view of the “Deep-Sea Conservation Coalition”.
